Website development

We develop websites for companies, community groups, projects, events, and other initiatives. These websites are custom-made for each client and can be as simple or as advanced as is required. Development time can range anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months or longer depending on complexity and other requirements.

Systems development

Does your organisation use a lot of (online) spreadsheets, shared documents, back-and-forth through e-mail, or other repeated processes that are not as efficient as they should be? We are here to help. We develop systems that can help centralise, automate, or streamline your internal or external processes. Solutions are built to suit your needs and can vary widely from internal communication systems, registration and data entry procedures, to mapping, monitoring or report generation.

Project & event management tools

Are you planning an upcoming event or are you managing a project? We are experienced builders of websites and tools to manage participant registration, activities, progress, calendars, etc. By using a custom-built website you can spend less time administering the website and more time administering your project or event.

Content management systems

For more flexibility over the content of your website we offer Wagtail, a modern content management system similar to WordPress and Drupal but with significantly more flexibility. Please note we don't work with frameworks like WordPress or Drupal, but instead build custom solutions through Wagtail to suit your exact needs.

Penguin Collective has been superb in creating the Communitree website. We asked for a very complex backend system that needed to track the movement of plants within our numerous nurseries and gardens. Quite a task! But after working through exactly what we needed, Penguin Collective responded with more than we could have imagined. Without this backend system, it would have been impossible to track our plants in the way we do. Their system has taken our work to the next level. And what a pleasant and down-to-earth group of people to work with. I recommend Penguin Collective for your website.

This looks brilliant – thanks again for interpreting our brief so well!

I am having a great time on the interface you created. It is really wonderful.

Since 2010, we have been teaching web development. This is not a commercial activity. Instead, it is a way to share our knowledge with people around us. These courses are taught to a variety of people: from young students just out of high school to people who have been working for many years in a variety of industries looking to reach their full potential in the web-development industry. These courses teach web development from scratch, starting with HTML and ending with database management.

The duration and specific roll-out will vary a bit depending on the level and availability of the students. There is generally one class session per week, with a high homework load (20+ hours). Our focus is to teach web development skills to people who can not afford this kind of course through other means. Courses are provided free of charge but each participant must go through a selection procedure.

We have provided 7 courses over the past 12 years, each course lasting generally 8-12 months. Groups have ranged from 7-24 participants, with about 25-35% of the participants graduating from this demanding course. Our goal is not to graduate the maximum number of people but instead to make sure that those that do graduate, really understand web development.
